Cocks and Trojans

I received a sweet email from a girl tonight and in it she told me her boyfriend was in medical school at USC. Well, that’s cool. But, um, I still really have no idea what medical school he goes to.

Did I confuse you? Let me explain…

True story

Soon after we moved to Charleston, SC, HJ and the girls and I were strolling around the local shopping center when I saw a guy in front of us with a “USC” hat. I had seen a few other people with “USC” shirts and bumper stickers and I thought it was a little strange. But at the same time, it kinda made me happy…because I felt connected to these people, because we had something in common. (if you don’t know what I’m talking about…hint: I grew up on the west coast.)

So when I saw this guy wearing that hat, this little conversation occurred between me & HJ.

Me: Isn’t it funny that people here are fans of “USC”?

HJ: No.

Me: Really? I do.

HJ: Why?

Me: I didn’t think people around here actually rooted for teams outside of their state. Especially for teams all the way over in southern California.

HJ: What?

Pointing to the dude on the sidewalk with the hat…

Me: See? I keep seeing bumper stickers and hats with “USC” on them.  I can’t believe people are fans of a California school. That’s crazy.

He stopped walking and looked at me…

HJ: Are you serious?

Me: {a little hesitant} Um, yeah.

{long pause while he continued to stare at me}

Me: What?!

HJ: Amber, my love. (no, he didn’t say “my love”…but he should have cause it would have helped with the delivery) What state do we live in?

Me: South Carolina.

HJ: Yeah…. South Carolina. Where we have the U-niversity of S-outh C-arolina.

Me: Ooohhhh, right. Well, that makes sense now. I was wondering why USC was always written in the wrong colors.

Duh.

So now you know why I have no clue where this boyfriend of hers is going to medical school.

As I was responding to her email and trying to explain my confusion which  “USC” she was referring to, it dawned on me that these two schools are kinda related. Well, OK, not so much the schools themselves.

I guess it has more to do with their mascots.

Go COCKS!

Go COCKS!

Go TROJANS!

Go TROJANS!

I apologize  for the immature nature of this post. It’s late, I’m tired. This is what happens when I’m left alone for too long without adult supervision.  HJ is on call so he isn’t around to impart his better judgement and discourage me from posting this.

I can be more mature and act like an adult and do responsible things. Seriously…. check out my project  I’m doing this month.

That is the best part about school mascots from old and well established schools, they now have very funny connotations. It is always hilarious when girls walk around with “Trojans” written across the bum of their sweatpants. I’m glad my university’s mascot is a Dinosaur…Go Dinos!

Love it! I can totally see myself having the same conversation with J! It’s hard for a girl keeping all those schools and sports teams straight! :) Glad to “meet” you through Medical Monday!
