Five Minute Friday: LOOK

Write for five minutes, unedited on …. LOOK

Ready, set, write….

I just spent a weekend with 200 other women. Women who are bloggers, who are on Facebook, who tweet, pin, and share on instagram.

Sometimes when I am on those platforms, I just feel like we are all just shouting “look at me! look at me!” …promoting the latest and greatest post we wrote, book we published, retweeting that affirming compliment someone paid us.

Are we looking for pats on the back? Acknowledgement? Worth?

Is that what we really want? Is there something more?

I know that I have used social media as a mask to hide behind, a place to escape my reality. When I am hurting, when I am suffering, I don’t want anyone to know. I hide behind a smile, a laugh, a shrug. I hide behind a post, an update, a tweet with a #smile.

I want them to look right past my pain.

And in this day and age, with everything moving so fast, that’s not hard to do.

But how many people are we missing the opportunity to really connect with because we don’t take the time to look any deeper than what we see on the surface? Or maybe that’s just it…our own lives are too busy to take the time to invest in someone else.

  2. Love this FMF post. It is all too easy to create a false front with social media. It’s sad, but I’ve sometimes read the blogs of people I actually know in “real life” and wonder “Who is THIS person?” I think it is vitally important that we not neglect creating “real” relationships with those around us while at the same time building “virtual” relationships through the ‘net. Thanks for the reminders!

I think that in some ways, many of us are looking to connect on a deeper level. I know I prefer to go deep but that can be hard in 140 characters. ;) But I do also think that our appearances of competence and our desire to hold it together and look a certain way hinder our ability to be real. And when we’re not real about who we are and where we are, it makes a wall that no one can penetrate. I am glad you are being real here and I look forward to getting to know you more. I was so happy when I saw your face linked up here. :)
