The Art of Getting Wrecked {my first give-away!}

Back in June, I decided I needed to learn a little more about this thing people call blogging. I somehow found blogger (now author) Jeff Goins. I loved all his articles on how to be a better writer. I have never had any aspirations to be a writer, but since blogging requires writing, I not only found his site helpful, but also incredibly inspiring.

I signed up for his newsletter and a few weeks later, I noticed he was releasing his first book.

Wrecked: when a broken world slams into your comfortable life.

I was introduced to the term “wrecked” when I moved to Music City three years ago. {You can read about it here.}

So, I could not wait to order the book (released August 1st) to see what he says about it, but sadly everyone else couldn’t either (I guess that’s a good thing). Even with my Amazon Prime, my 2-day shipping was more like two weeks.

Though I prefer a real book over an e-reader, I got antsy the other night, and pulled out my sNOOKi nook. Lo and behold…the book was  only a whopping 99 cents! (I received a free copy to download onto my nook for buying a hard copy the first few days of it’s release, but since I have no idea how to do that, $.99 sounded like a much better plan.)

I read the book in just a few hours. It gave me much to think about.

Then yesterday, as I was processing the message and how it applies to my life, I was inspired and headed down to the basement {this is where the creative magic comes alive}.

I started sketching different images into my art journal. Then made a few leather cuffs.

If you can see, on two of those cuffs it says Choisi.

Choisi means “chosen” in french.

In the midst of my pit, I met my friend, Sandra. She told me an amazing story that spanned over 25 years (25 years of waiting!). From this story, Choisi for Orphans was founded to raise funds to build an orphanage for 200 orphans in Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa.

Hearing her story was instrumental in opening my eyes and heart to the bigger picture. I so desperately wanted to help her but was not in a healthy place to be able to do that. But whenever I create, her story is always in the back of my mind and inspires me through words and images.

So, it got me to thinking…..

There are 3 things I would like to do:

1) My first GIVE-AWAY!!!! I would love to give these 3 cuffs to some lucky peeps…not just because I think they are pretty awesome, but because when you’re out sporting your new wrist bling and someone asks you about it, you will have the opportunity to tell them about Choisi for Orphans and/or what it means to be wrecked ;).

2) I’m also giving away a copy of the real (not digital) book of “Wrecked”!

So below or on Facebook, please leave me a comment. If you don’t know what to write, then tell me your favorite quote (1. because I love quotes and 2. because I never know what to write in the comments when I enter a give-away).

I’ll pick the winners Sunday night, or maybe Monday morning. There will be 3 winners: 1st get the book and a cuff, and the other 2 get a cuff.

And share the fun with your friends, if you wanna :)

And finally…

3) Calling all creative, artsy souls! {Yes, that means you…cause I believe we were all made to create!} I would like to invite you to participate in an online “art show” inspired by the message of this book. Your “art” can be anything!…a sketch in a journal, a mixed media canvas, jewelry, sculpture, poem, something sewn…whatever you love to do, just create!

If you think you would like to participate:

1) shoot me an email letting me know you are interested  to theunconventionaldoctorswife(at)gmail(dot)com or tell me in the comments

2) start reading the book!

This week only, you can get it for $.99 on your Nook or Kindle!!! and FYI: You don’t have to have a Kindle, there are kindle apps for phones and computers. Or check here for other places to purchase.

I can’t wait to see how everyone uses their creative gifts and how the book translates into their art and creations!

So are you ready to get wrecked? (…and no, not like what it meant back in college, silly) This kind of wrecked is the best kind there is :)

I can’t believe you MADE those! They are awesome! I like the quote by (I think) Abraham Lincoln “Whatever you are, be a good one”.

I’m gonna download the book “WRECKED” asap. Your cuffs are FAB! I love so many quotes but this one is in the forefront right now: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.

Hi Amber, what a great idea! Your cuffs are beautiful. I am a reader so I will definitely check out that book.

I like this quote….”All art requires courage.” – Anne Tucker. I made a piece for my metal artist husband with this quote and he hung it up right away. :)

Thanks for doing this and have a nice weekend.

  6. Sally Peterson says:

Hello my talented artsy friend. My favorite quote of all time is from Pablo Picasso – “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” So true. :) Love you!

    • Amber says:

Did you see in the comments below?…Lis put that quote too! I have never heard it before! Love it and love you too!

  7. Gina says:

Lovin’ your cuffs!! So glad you found your inspiration. I have so many quotes that I favor but my favorite poem (just to be different) is “I carry your heart” by e.e.Cummings.
Can’t wait to read the book and create some art for you.

I don’t see why this can’t be international. I’ve never shipped anything to South Africa before…there’s a first for everything! That quote is a good one to remember :)

  9. Kate Barton says:

One of my favorite quotes is, “Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” by the wonderful Dr. Suess!

I’ll be sure to download the book on my kindle and get started on it!

I’d also love to create something for you my friend. I miss you and wish we could meet for a trenta iced tea at Starbucks, not that you are not welcome at my house :) Wish we were closer. Keep not-writing!

    • Amber says:

ah, Dr. Suess…such a wise man. But really, that one is a good reminder, for realz. And yay for creating something…can’t wait to see your masterpiece! I miss you too and wished we didn’t live so far away :(

  10. Lis says:

These cuffs are SO gorgeous and totally MY STYLE:} So happy that you found the boost that you needed! thought I am not a big reader, I do love things that inspire… so I just installed the Kindle app on my Iphone and will look into the book:} I am definitely a lover of words so here is a fun quote “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life”. Blessings to you on your journey!

  11. Kandi says:

I would love to enter your giveaway!!! The bracelets are gorgeous!!!! Off to look for the book!!!

  12. Mary Elizabeth Maynord says:

Hey! I didn’t know you were craftsy :) A good quote that I read in my devotional book the other day was, “We do not thank God because ‘things are good;’ instead, we thank Him because HE is good.” Good food for thought…great blog, by the way!

  13. Lisa says:

Greetings fellow “classmate” :) When you asked to share our favorite quote, I have to laugh. This one always pops into my head and it has no relevance to anything whatsoever. A high school girlfriend loved the bank the Monkees and I “think” Peter Tork said this:

“and thus shall it ever be – when the forces of evil oppose the forces of goodness and sweetness and niceness – crime does not pay!”

So there you have it :) You’ve got me VERY curious about this “Wrecked” book and your cuffs are LOVELY! Cheers to you!

Amber! These bracelets are soooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!

    • Amber says:

Thanks Lindsey. And just so you know, I am still planning on coming over one day so you can teach me some sweet crafty skillz.

  15. Jill Vosburg says:

My favorite quote is “it is what it is”. I don’t where it started, but it helps me relax and handle situations. Sometimes I have to change it to “we are what we are”.
Anyway….. I am so proud of you! You’re blog is wonderful. I’d like to buy some cuffs too!
